What an educational, productive and fun week we all had this year at Pittcon, in Orlando, FL. There really is no conference like Pittcon here in the United States, and after such a tumbling economic year, our thoughts were mixed as to how many exhibitors and attendees would actually make it.
We were pleasantly surprised. Over 2,000 exhibitors and 17,000 attendees made it to Orlando, to evaluate new products and technologies, make purchase decisions, and build valuable business connections. It was our fourth year to exhibit, and I can say one of the most successful to date.
It is mind-blowing to think that over 61 years ago, the only way we learned about new products and innovations were at conferences like Pittcon. Now adays, of course, scientists and companies are tuned into web services, social networking and even text messages.
Even though I am up to date on all the latest ways of communication, Pittcon offers you something that you can not get through a computer or mobile screen. The countless interactions with the technicians, inventors and business owners who are surrounded by these new products and means of technology on a daily basis is incomparable. I guess I am a visual learner, so holding the products and watching at glance what they are capable of doing for you and other labs is extremely effective for me.
As you walk from booth to booth (or ride on the extended golf cart), you can feel the minds of others working at incredible rates, pacing from one idea to the next. It truly is overwhelming.
The conference is from 9-5, which leaves us time to spend with customers, vendors, potential customers, and colleges during the evening hours. Of course the standard dinner, drinks, and conversations about life and dreams filled this time.
Wednesday night, Pittcon sponsored a Universal Studios night, in which we were sure not to miss. It was great to only wait an average 10 minutes for each ride and attraction. Walking the park, every corner was occupied by various entertainers of dj’s spinning records, break dancers, and even refreshment counters. Check out this footage to get a feel for what the streets were like at Universal Studios that night.
